Episode 1128 of One Piece is one of those entries with such high visual fidelity that it makes you forget you're watching weekly television.

Just an absolute smorgasbord of quality animation this week, truly. It's a bit wild to reflect on movie ventures around the time I got into One Piece, like Toei's animation stable has put out ever since, especially from Wano to now. Most weeks, I find myself falling into the steady rhythm of high expectations – of course, it looks good, it's the One Piece anime! Funny how things shift.

But even with the bar set so high, I wasn't prepared for how strong this episode was. The actual events and storytelling within are already strong, so I knew there would be good material to work with. Yet the whole episode is just leaping off the screen. Bonney's scramble to safety, the Zoro and Lucci fight, Luffy and Kizaru's ongoing battle, the jovial jaunt of Vegapunk's little cloud car – all wonderfully rendered and full of exquisite detail (like Bonney reaching for a pistol a few times without looking).

The St Saturn transformation steals the show. It is bewildering how good it is, pure liquid evil that smokes and billows as it takes on horrifying arachnid form. An eldritch horror who alters the world itself, bursting eyes that even behold it – all brought to writhing, unnatural life by skilled animators doing this for weekly television. It's a rarity these days. While watching, I said “What a time to be alive…” and meant it as a positive affirmation. There's no telling what we have in store next week, but this certainly sets a high bar for whatever follows.
